Koalas, like other marsupials, are very small when they are born. A new born koala is about the size of a bean and looks rather like a hairless grub. It climbs into its mother's pouch and suckles and grows in there. Click the link below for more information.

Koalas have woolly light to dark grey fur with brown and white patches and a cream belly. Koalas from the south tend towards a darker grey-brownish colouring, with longer fur. They have a broad head with small eyes, large furry ears and a distinctive large oval-shaped black nose. The female has two teats and a rear opening pouch. Mature males can have a yellow-brown stain on their chest, the result of their scent gland.

Koalas have very strong, sharp claws for tree climbing. They do not have tails, but have thick padding on their bottom, the fur of which has a mottled appearance.

Koalas from the northern parts of Australia are smaller, with males growing to 740 mm and weighing 9 kg, and females growing to 720 mm and weighing 7.25 kg. Koalas from the south have longer fur, particularly noticeable in the longer ear-tufts, and are larger. The males can grow to 820 mm and 15 kg whilst females can grow to 730 mm and 11 kg.

Koalas are mammals (but not bears). As mammals, characteristics from a "classification" point include:

  • they are marsupials, i.e. the young are born extremely undeveloped, and crawl into the mother's pouch where they latch onto a teat which swells in their mouth, securing them in the pouch
  • Koalas give birth to live young, which then feed on mothers' milk
  • they are vertebrates
  • they breathe through lungs (rather than gills)
  • they have fur (mammals have fur, skin or hair)
  • they are warm blooded

Characteristics unique to koalas are:

  • Koalas have very strong claws suitable for gripping trees and climbing. Between their first and second "fingers" is a large gap, which enables them to also grip tree branches comfortably, whilst their hind legs have one toe set at a wide angle. They also have toes with thick pads which enable them to sit comfortably in a tree all day.
  • In order to attract a mate, the male has a scent gland which emits a very strong scent. It tends to stain his chest a yellowish brown colour.
  • Koalas in southern regions have thick, wool-like waterproof fur to keep them warm in cold weather and dry in rain. Koalas in northern regions are smaller, with less dense fur.

Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) are herbivorous marsupials that live in eastern Australia. They are the only species of the family Phascolarctidae. The koala is also often called the koala bear because it looks like a small bear or teddy bear. However, it is not a bear. Its name is just "koala".

Koalas have woolly light to dark grey fur with brown and white patches and a cream belly. Southern koalas have longer fur which tends to be browner than that of the northern koalas.

In order to attract a mate, the male has a scent gland which emits a very strong scent, and which leaves a yellowish-brown stain on his chest. They have a broad head with small eyes, large furry ears and a distinctive large black nose. Females have two teats and a rear opening pouch.

Northern koalas can grow to 740 mm and 9 kg for males and 720 mm and 7.25 kg for females. Southern koalas can grow to 820 mm and 15 kg for males and 730 mm and 11 kg for females. They can live for up to 18 years for females and a bit less for males. They spend up to 20 hours per day sleeping and the rest eating.

Between their first and second "fingers" is a large gap, which enables them to also grip tree branches comfortably, whilst their hind legs have one toe set at a wide angle. There are over 60 species of kangaroo, from the largest, the Red kangaroo, through many varieties of wallabies, and down to the smallest member of the kangaroo, the musky-rat kangaroo. Because there are so many varieties, their colour varies from reddish-brown to grey, some having darker extremities (feet, nose, tail), such as the wallaroo.

Kangaroos' ears are pointed and able to move in many different directions as they listen for potential dangers. Kangaroos of all species are known for their powerful legs, and all members of the kangaroo family share this characteristic of strong hind legs and short forelegs. They do not tire, as the hopping motion actually refills their lungs as they move - therefore, there is minimum expenditure of energy. The forelegs have no thumb. The female kangaroo has a pouch for the joey (baby). Kangaroos are well known for their jumping capabilities and use their long, powerful, muscular tails to help balance.
