Mosaic was the first graphical web browser. Mosaic was originally developed by Eric Bina and Marc Andreessen at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Ilinois at Urbana-Champagne. Mosaic ran only on Unix systems under X-Windows for some time before eventually being ported to other operating systems such as Microsoft Windows.

Eventually Marc Andreessen, one of the authors of Mosaic, along with Jim Clark formerly of Silicon Graphics, and several others, joined to form Mosaic Communications Corp. which eventually morphed into Netscape Communications Corp. [JMH]

How did the name Mozilla Firefox originate?

Because the name Mozilla Firefox is cool , it is very great! it rocks. And mozilla is great , too.Marc Andreesen was a student at the University of Illinois, Champagne-Urbana. In the days when the World-Wide Web was in its infancy and used exclusively TEXT to link other text documents together, Andreesen developed a graphical web browser that he named "Mosaic", because it would form a "mosaic" of text and graphics in the page all together. When he graduated from college, he began work on an improved Mosaic program. It would be a SUPER mosaic program. It would become the GODZILLA of Mosaic programs! It would be the MOsaic godZILLA program, and the original graphic was a fire-breathing monster. The company was known as Netscape.Netscape was purchased by America Online, and languished until the core of Mozilla developers broke away to form their own company.

When did the world wide web become popular?

If we were to pick a single event, it would have to be the creation of the first visual browser, called "Mosaic" in 1993 by the NCSA team at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "Mosaic" gave the world wide web (which had been developed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989) a face. With the "visual browser", anyone could tap into the full power of the world wide web. You no longer had to be a tech-savvy engineer. Today's browsers (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari...) are all the grandchildren of that first browser.

What was the first browser program?

Mosaic is the web browser credited with popularizing the World Wide Web. It was also a client for earlier protocols such as FTP, NNTP, and gopher. Its clean, easily understood user interface, reliability, Windows port and simple installation all contributed to making it the application that opened up the Web to the general public. Mosaic was also the first browser to display images inline with text instead of displaying images in a separate window. While often described as the first graphical web browser, Mosaic was preceded by the lesser-known Erwise and ViolaWWW. Mosaic was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign beginning in late 1992. NCSA released the browser in 1993, and officially discontinued development and support on January 7, 1997. However, it can still be downloaded from NCSA. Fifteen years after Mosaic's introduction, the most popular contemporary browsers, Internet Explorer , Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome retain many of the characteristics of the original Mosaic graphical user interface (GUI) and interactive experience.

Yes. The mosaic is the only art form not borrowed from other cultures. From Musivarius: It tends to be acepted that the Romans took the craft of mosaic from the Greeks who developed floor mosaics made with pebbles starting in the 5th century BC. These began to be made using cut stone from about the 3rd century BC and with the take over of Greece in 2nd century BC the Romans developed a taste for floor mosaics.
