Offical estimates of 2001 put Muslim population at 1.6% which was 22 million. 2011 census information will be released sometime in mid 2011. However actually population is estimated higher due to the fact that during census the government DOES NOT actually ask what religion a peron follows but assumes by ethinicty. (e.g government assumes all hui Chinese are Muslims). Research from different organisations like "San Diego State University" put the population number up to around 65 million (around 4.8%)

According to different sources:Muslims of China exceed 100 Million according to the main Islamic Statistic center in Turkey.Around 22 million Muslims in China (1.6 % of total China Population) as of Oct 2009 per Pew Forum Study.Recent census counts imply that there may be up to 20 million Muslims in China. However, the latest statistics of 2013, states that the total Muslim population is at least 150 million. refer to link below.(A note on the above source stating that there are at least 150 million Muslims in China, that source uses population estimates from the 1940s and 1950s and assumes that Muslim population growth increased at the same rate as China overall - as opposed to taking a current census of Chinese Muslims. This method of estimating a population is extremely flawed, especially in the case of Chinese Muslims for two reasons: (1) Many Chinese Muslims live in Xinjiang Province and the borders between Xinjiang and the former Soviet Central Asian countries were very pourous in the 1940s and 1950s leading to double-counting and confusion national affiliations; and (2) Islam in China was brutally repressed in the Cultural Revolution, which would naturally lead to a decrease in adherents relative to the overall population. Numbers between 20-50 million persons are much more reasonable)
