National Food Security Bill was introduced in India and seeks to provide a legal entitlement to subsidized food-grains to 75 percent of the country's rural population and 50 percent of urban India.
The estimates suggest that 68 percent of the country's population would get legal entitlement after the bill is enacted. This would create more demand for food-grains and at the same time production may not increase correspondingly leading to demand-driven inflation. In this manner India would then become more dependent on the import of food grain and would open doors for easy import ... of essential commodities and in turn would create a back door entry to the FDI in retail as well.
The food security bill int he year 2011 is to provide subsidized food grains. This is also known as the National Food Security Act.
