How is Navajo culture similar to the early Navajo culture?

Much of Navajo culture is the same even though it has gradually changed. Many things that are new to the Navajo become "Navajo-ized". For example working with silver came from the Spanish long ago but the patterns and aesthetics are very Navajo with fourfold symmetry and stones that have traditional religious/philosophical meanings. Weaving probably came from the Pueblo peoples and yet the themes are very Navajo. Even the word for car is not borrowed but from how the first model T's sounded- "Chidi", from chidi, chidi, chidi. Many Navajo live very modern "American" lives, but many others still have sheep and grow corn. Many still speak the Navajo language and many practice the traditional religion. For example, many people have a " first laugh" ceremony for their baby. Traditional philosophy is alive and well on the Navajo Nation

Which is an important part of Navajo religious cerimonies?

The most important part of any Navajo ceremony is restoring and maintaining Hózhǫ́ .This is the central concept in Navajo religion and philosophy. It is very complex and deep but is means in one word what we mean with the Engliah words: Harmony, the good, beauty, peace, health and dyanamic balance (not static). Navajo religious ceremonies are often called Chantways. They are led by a Hataałii, which means chanter or singer and is often called a medicineman. Many of the chantways are for healing, balance or harmony or correcting taboos that have been broken. Others are for different types of blessings and the Kinaalda ( first menstruation ceremony). There are 60 so ceremonies. Manny last four or more days. Usually, someone goes to a diagnostician first to find out what ceremony needs to be done. Then they find a medicineman who is knows that ceremony. A ceremony usually involves family and clan members, friends and the larger community. Besides the idea of hózhǫ́ there is not really one important part that is common to all ceremonies. The medicine-man who is highly trained and must have studied and memorized for many years, leads the ceremony and conducts all the actions that happen. There are prayers, chants, songs, myths recited and the sometimes sand paintings, dancing, ritual movements and herbs and other items. The ceremony must be performed exactly in order to be successful.
