The Northern Pole of Inaccessibility (84°03′N 174°51′W) is located on the Arctic Ocean pack ice at a distance farthest from any land mass. It is 661 km (411 statute miles) from the North Pole, 1,453 km (903 mi) north of Barrow, Alaska, and equidistant from the closest landmasses, Ellesmere Island and Franz-Josef Land, 1,094 km (680 mi) away. It was first crossed by Sir Hubert Wilkins, who flew by aircraft in 1927, in 1958 a Russian icebreaker reached this point. The first person to reach the spot on foot was Sir Wally Herbert, who arrived by dog-sled in 1968. Owing to the constant motion of the pack ice, no permanent structure can exist at this pole.

What is the Southern Pole of Inaccessibility?

The Southern Pole of Inaccessibility is far more remote and difficult to reach than the Geographic South Pole. The location of the southern Pole of Inaccessibility is open to some debate, depending on whether one defines the edge of Antarctica by the edge of the ice that rests on land, or the edge of the ice sheet, including the ice shelves. The most frequently used location is 82° 06'S, 54° 58'E (while other sources give 82°53'S, 55°4'E; 83°50'S, 65°43'E (as determined by the British Antarctic Survey); 85°50'S, 65°47'E (as determined by the Scott Polar Research Institute)). Using the most common definition, the Pole of Inaccessibility lies 885 km (532 statute miles) from the South Pole and is approximately 3,800 metres (12,500ft) above sea level. Due to it's remoteness and the unique challenges of traveling in Antarctica, the Southern Pole of Inaccessibility has only been visited a few times in history.

What are the Poles of Inaccessibility?

A pole of inaccessibility marks a location that is the most challenging to reach. The term describes a geographical construct, not an actual physical phenomenon, and is of interest only to explorers. The northern pole of inaccessibility known as the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility is located on the Arctic Ocean ice sheet at a distance farthest from any land mass. It is 661 km (411 miles) from the North Pole, 1,453 km (903 mi) north of Barrow, Alaska, and equidistant from the closest landmasses, Ellesmere Island and Franz-Josef Land, 1,094 km (680 mi) away. The first person to reach the spot on foot was Sir Wally Herbert, who arrived by dog-sled in 1968. Owing to the constant motion of the pack ice, no permanent structure can exist at this pole. The southern pole of inaccessibility is the point on the Antarctic continent most distant from the Southern Ocean. A variety of different coordinate locations have been given for this pole. The discrepancies are due to the question of whether the coast is measured to the coastline or to the edges of ice shelves. The best position of the southern pole of inaccessibility is thought to be given by the British Antarctic Survey of the Scott Polar Research Institute. they give 2 coordinates, one for the coastline and one for the ice shelves, 82°53′14″S 55°4′30″E and 83°50′37″S 65°43′30″E.The southern pole of inaccessibility is far more remote and difficult to reach than the Geographic South Pole. On 14 December 1958, the 3rd Soviet Antarctic Expedition for the International Geophysical Year led by Yevgeny Tolstikov, established the temporary Pole of Inaccessibility Station. This site is now protected as a historical site and is marked by a bust of Lenin facing towards Moscow, upon a plinth and a golden visitors book for all who reach it to sign. (Those Crazy Russians). The oceanic pole of inaccessibility is the place in the ocean that is farthest from land. It lies in the South Pacific Ocean, 2,688 km (1,670 mi or 1,451 NM) from the nearest lands which are Ducie Island (part of the Pitcairn Islands) in the north, Motu Nui (part of the Easter Islands) in the north-east, and Maher Island (near the larger Siple Island, off the coast of Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica) in the south. Chatham Island lies farther west, and Southern Chile in the east. This location is also referred to as Point Nemo.

What is the name for the southernmost part of earth located near the center of Antarctica?

You may be thinking of the South Pole -- the southern-most part measured in latitude, or the Pole of Inaccessibility -- measured from the coasts of Antarctica. Both can be called 'centers'.

What are the geographical poles?

Your answer depends on what you're describing. Generally, in geography, the word pole indicates an extreme: the pole of inaccessibility, for example.Geographically, the North Pole and the South Pole mark positions on Earth that are farthest away from the Equator. Each is expressed in degrees of latitude -- 90 -- and followed by the notation that indicates on which side of the Equator you can find the pole -- N or S.
