Many people feel The Bible is ONE book, with prophecies and groundwork laid out in the OT, and fulfilled and expanded in the NT.
The "Old Testament"(Hebrew Scriptures) is the only place to find the answers to life's most basic questions:
why we're here (Genesis 1:1 / 2:7)what's our purpose (Genesis 1:28 / 2:15)who God is(Psalm 83:18)(Deuteronomy 32:4) what he wants(Deuteronomy 10:12)(Micah 6:8)(Isaiah 1:18-19)(Psalm 119:4)(1 Samuel 15:22)why we die(Genesis 2:16+17 / 3:1-6)(as recounted at Romans 5:12),who satan is(Genesis 3:1-7(referred to in Revelation 12:9 )Job 2+3), why the world is a mess, what God will do about it, who Messiah is and why he's needed(Genesis 3:15/ 22:18 / 49:10)(Daniel 9:25) .
Without the Old Testament, the New Testament would make very little sense.

The work of salvation is not done by you, or by the person who may have witnessed to your friend. The work of salvation is done by the Spirit. Don't worry about the parts of the process that the Spirit alone can accomplish. Gently remind your friend from time to time (and I mean maybe once or twice a year) about the need for salvation, and leave gods work to god. Once a person has heard the Word, then you can be sure that things will fall in place according to gods will.
