The irony is that Paul finally obtains what he has so long desired, luck and money, but in so doing, he dies. Since it was luck that he was after in the form of picking winning race horses, he very well may have been lucky all along.

"The Rocking-Horse Winner" is told from a third-person omniscient point of view, where the narrator has access to the thoughts and feelings of multiple characters. This perspective allows the reader to understand the inner workings of the characters and their motivations, enhancing the story's themes of greed, materialism, and the destructive pursuit of wealth.

  • The theme is that materialism is not the most important thing in life. Paul was striving for luck and money and when he attained them he died as a result of his efforts. Paul's mother finally had the money she desperately wanted, but lost her son in getting it.

  • On the humorous side I understood that one must never marry for love, or else his/her son will go bonkers and die!" But seriously speaking, the main them is that materialism and love for money is very harmful as it can destroy people.

I think the point of view of this story is Third person Limited, because you can't find any comments given by narrator. I think Paul's mother is telling the story according to the end of the story "My God Hestor you got eighty-odd….".

The conflict is one of man against society or life in general in the sense that Paul must obtain enough money so that the family can survive and live as well as it wants to.
