It depends on which part of Italy and which school. In general we can say that public schools in Italy have a pretty high level. Children from 5 to 10 attend "Scuole Elementari" (which are generally at a good level). Children from 11 to 13 attend "Scuole Medie" (which are usually a little lower, speaking in terms of quality of teaching) Kids from 14 to to 19 attend "Scuole Superiori", these can be of various types and the level of education clearly depends on the single institute.
Education in Italy is compulsory from 6 to 15/16 years of age.
