It is used for pleasure and for transport. In central London, it is used for passenger ferries and for transporting heavy freight. The west of the Thames, from Teddington down is mostly used by pleasure craft.

The River Thames was used for transporting goods by river from the sea at the time of Henry VIII. This was one of the primary reasons for London's location, for easy Importing and Exporting access. Now though, importing ships are too wide to fit on the river and so docks on the coasts are used instead, or by air-cargo.
