The story of Len Hope was told at a FAIR conference in 2006. The story is much to long to contain in an answer, so I will give you the link to the speech at the "Related Links" below. The story of Brother Hope starts about 2/3 of the way down. You can search the page for the name 'Len Hope' if you need help finding it.
But to make a long story short, Len Hope was a convert in the early 20th century. He had found a pamphlet about the Holy Ghost which he saw as an answer to prayer. He contacted the missionaries in his area and told them he wanted to be baptized. They told him he might want to learn about the Church first and gave him some books. He took these books with him as he went overseas to fight in WWI and was baptized upon his return.
The KKK was after him and accused him of 'trying to be white' for joining the Church. He and his wife moved to Cincinatti, where many of the members were racist. They threatened to leave the Church if Brother Hope and his wife continued attending, so once a month the local leaders would visit the Hopes in their home and have a private worship service.

The actual problem of the story.
The story is fiction. There were no "actual people". I am not aware that the producers of the movie ever claimed that it was real.
Actually, St. Olivia never really existed. She was the main charcter in a story circulating in the early Church but that was mistaken for an actual biography. Even so, she was venerated for centuries.
