Other than a small saving in energy consumption and (some say) a better color rendition, there are no significant benefits to be seen.
About to be launched is a true LED television. It is likely to be known as OLED and it uses a red, green and blue LED for each and every pixel on the screen. By lighting each LED as needed, a picture is directly created by the LED panel and requires no LCD layer to operate. It will have some significant benefits: The technology will allow higher contrast ratios and more energy efficiency. 2013 should see the first of the true LED televisions making it to market
