Large animals need a lot of energy in order to continue to function correctly. During a period of environmental change, or environmental disaster, there tends to be a restriction of environmental essentials.

Large animals, especially carnivores tend to be at the upper section of the ecosystem, preying off smaller animals. Not only preying off them, these animals are dependant upon them for food. If a species lower in the ecosystem becomes extinct, the carnivores must adjust to this change and feed off another species. If biodiversity is shallow, the larger species is practically doomed.
