There are portable, usually called bedside spirometers, but they have limited lung values. If your dr sends you to a PFT pulmonary function testing lab. The tests there are comprehensive but not invasie. no needles or anything. There is a clear plastic box you sit upright in and breathe into a tube while being prompted by a pft pulmonary function tech.. They cal it body box. its very accurate becasue it measures the air in the box too. so whatever you breathe into the tube the the exhaled volume is accurate. your question.what is the advantage. The value in a test such as this holding onto the results of it. It will diagnose the severity of either and obstructive or resrtictive lung disease. so your resullts are filed away, the dr can compare. if you have a lung disease. and u apply for an assembly line worker job and they want you to take a test, they are only coveing their back side from any future lawsuits where 20 years later that new emply filed a lawsuit claiming injusry form inhaling noxious fumes................claiming injuries happened on the job..................meanwhile the they still have your pft before u started to prove that you already had lung disease.

What is a spirometry lung function test?

A lung function test is an important tool used by your physician and healthcare team to evaluate your ability to breathe. Lung disease can lead to serious complications if it’s not diagnosed early and treated properly. In fact, for some diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), treating lung problems early on can reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. Your doctor may recommend a lung function test based on certain factors, including your age, gender, smoking history and family history of respiratory problems. The purpose of a spirometry lung function test is to help determine how well you’re able to move air in and out of your lungs by assessing how much air you can exhale in one second while taking into account other factors such as gender, height and weight.
