If you have not reached Enlightenment, then you come back to life in a different body. If you have reached Enlightenment, then you may come back to earth as a bodhisattva, a fully enlightened being who descends to Earth to help teach dharma to benefit the suffering souls. A fully enlightened being may enter Nirvana, and leave behind the material world with all its sufferings.

There isn't much "afterlife" in Buddhism. If you are unenlightened you do not do anything but be reborn for another kick at the can.

If you achieve enlightenment you may or may not opt to enter Nirvana.

If you do not chose Nirvana you reenter the cycle of death and rebirth to aid others in there search for enlightenment.

If you enter Nirvns you lose all sense of a separate self.

To put this in Christiain terms there is no white wings and singing hymns forever to praise god for Buddhists.

What happens to bad Buddhist people in the afterlife?

Buddhism doesn't teach about afterlife at all. Some Buddhists - but not all - believe in reincarnation, which says that each time a body dies, the person's soul returns to a new body until the person attains full spiritual understanding. . However, Buddhism doesn't teach reincarnation, either. . Buddhism does teach that people are to live with awareness, kindness, and generosity, that they should work hard and be thankful. The goal of Buddhism is to help people become more aware -- to wake up to eternal wisdom.
