It depends who you ask: The Irish nation is among the oldest in Europe and dates back millennia. However, the modern Republic of Ireland is of relatively recent origin. In 1916 the Republic was declared by Pearse et. al. at the GPO. In 1918 Sinn Fein overwhelmingly won election to the Irish Parliament and refused to sit instead proclaiming a Republic, this marked the beginning of the War of Independence. In 1921 the Anglo-Irish treaty created the "Irish Free State" which was part of the British Commonwealth. This promptly sparked a civil war in Ireland which the Free-staters (supporters of the treaty) won. Ratified in 1922. In 1949 the Free State was renamed Éire (Ireland in Irish), received a new republican constitution and ceased to be part of the commonwealth. To this day, the entire country is not united.

∙ 11y agoThe land that is now called "Ireland" is thousands of years old. Ancient peoples lived there and there are still many of their traditions that have come down to modern man, but with different names.
