To eliminate ignorance. To get an education means to have career opportunities open to you. Without some sort of education, the chances of being able to be successful in the first world (at least) are decreased. Many employers will not hire someone without a high school diploma, and the standards are only getting higher as far as university degrees. To exercise your mind and teach you disipline. It also will help you in future careers.

They, (refferring to either government or teachers themselves) believe that they are preparing us for anything, which is correct in concept in a sense. They expect us (youth+others in schooling) to learn what we need and then some, in the process learning many spontaneous and otherwise useless facts pertaining only within specific fields because they assume that we (the youth) don't know what "we want". However; on a college level you get to choose what you learn about, specifically learning about the task or areas within your desired job's(career's?) expertise attempting to teach you the smaller concepts and gradually branch out so that you understand every detail of your chosen task. This might be so that you can fully explain and prove you understand it; even potentially taking on a mentorship within that field at a later point in your life. But if it were purely for mentorship; I believe we would all be back in the age of time whence most people were following their lineage and doing the same job their great grandfather did, so-on and so fort. I think, the government believes that if we are educated we will be able to improve on the life-long(or less) career of our choice and more easily advance the field because we will have background knowledge and understanding in how it came to be. This being said, I believe the recent augmentation of schooling is simply to increase the rate which technology and all job fields as well as studies is done, which will result in more schooling being required by the future generation and cyclically go about as each individual field advances within its own right redundantly.

The purpose of education varies with age. In elementary and middle school, education is primarily for learning basic skills that will be used throughout life such as reading, writing, math, basic knowledge of different subjects and social skills. High school goes more in depth on a broad range of different subjects, develops different ways of thinking and continues to develop social skills; High school is also preparatory to college. The purpose of college is to develop more specific knowledge in one area of study and/or to develop skills for a specific career. Overall though, education develops an individual's mind and them as a person; it is also how knowledge and skills are passed on to the next generation.
