Mass usually begins with an opening hymn, or "processional hymn", but this is not part of the mass itself. The first piece of music proper to the mass itself is called the "Introit".

I switched from passive to active voice so you could see the difference between sung and sang. If you are expressing the simple past tense, use sang. I sang, you sang, he sang. If you are using more complex tenses, use sung, the past participle. You would not say the anthem was sang, and you would not say he sung the anthem.
At the 2012 Olympics in London, they sung "God save the Queen", England's national anthem.
