Eve took fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of good & evil. Since there was only one such tree in the garden, it would not be a fruit we know. Artists painted the scene during the Renaissance, and depicted an apple, which lead to the common reference.

The translation was misinterpreted and it was assumed that the apple was the forbidden fruit. The literal translation of the ancient texts actually describes the pomegranate.

Eve gave Adam an apple to eat from the one tree 'the tree of knowledge" that God told them not to eat from. Eve was tricked by the devil who was in the form of a serpent at the time.
