On the main crucifix, one says the 'Apostle's Creed'. On the large beads (the single beads) one says the 'Our Father'. On the groupings of beads one says the 'Hail Mary', on the last bead of each group, one also says the 'Glory be to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit'.

Is Rosary relevant today?

.Catholic AnswerThe Rosary is meditation on the events of the life of Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ. As such it will never be irrelevant. Our Blessed Lady has appeared numerous times, and always recommends the regular recitation of the rosary, saying that such is a great sign of predestination. Attached at the bottom is a link to the Apostolic Letter of Pope John Paul II, of happy memory, which he issued on the Rosary in October of 2002. Also, there is a link to a related question which tells you how to pray the rosary and lists all the prayers in order.

When did Jesus say pray with the rosary?

Jesus never said pray the rosary. The Church has come up with the prayer of the rosary to the virgin Mary.Roman Catholic AnswerThe Rosary recalls important events in the life of Our Blessed Lord, He didn't say the Rosary, He lived it. Our Blessed Lord sent His Mother to earth to give us the form of the Rosary that we have today, she appeared to St. Dominic, who founded the Dominican Order, and gave him the Rosary in order to convert the heretics that he was preaching to. As the rosary is primarily mental prayer on the Mysteries (the events in the life of Our Blessed Lord, and His Mother) it is a wonderful way to learn basic prayer. You should learn it well, and stick with it your whole life.

When and why did the Rosary come to be?

Rosary - History ---- It is usually suggested that the rosary began as a practice by the laity to imitate the monastic Office (Breviary or Liturgy of the Hours), by which monks prayed the 150 Psalms. The laity, many of whom could not read, substituted 50 or 150 Ave Marias for the Psalms. Sometimes a cord with counters on it was used to keep an accurate count. The first clear historical reference to the rosary, however, is from the life of St. Dominic (+1221), the founder of the Order of Preachers or Dominicans. He preached a form of the rosary in France at the time that the Albigensian heresy was devastating the faith there. Tradition has it that the Blessed Mother herself asked for the practice as an antidote for heresy and sin. One of Dominic's future disciples, Alain de Roche, began to establish Rosary Confraternities to promote the praying of the rosary. The form of the rosary we have today is believed to date from his time. Over the centuries the saints and popes have highly recommended the rosary, the greatest prayer in the Church after the Mass and Liturgy of the Hours. Not surprisingly, it's most active promoters have been Dominicans. Rosary means a crown of roses, a spiritual bouquet given to the Blessed Mother. It is sometimes called the Dominican Rosary, to distinguish it from other rosary-like prayers (e.g. Franciscan Rosary of the Seven Joys, Servite Rosary of the Seven Sorrows). It is also, in a general sense, a form of chaplet or corona (also referring to a crown), of which there are many varieties in the Church. Finally, in English it has been called "Our Lady's Psalter" or "the beads." This last derives from an Old English word for prayers (bede) and to request (biddan or bid).

How do you wear a rosary?

If you want to wear a Rosary, you may wear it in any way you please. It's a free country. However, be aware that a Rosary is not jewelry.A Rosary is an aid to prayer and a powerful symbol used to recall the events in Jesus's life, Think of how people described stained-glass windows in the Middle ages, "the poor man's Bible."Would you buy a Jewish yarmulke and ask a Rabbi if it's okay to mount a propeller on it so you can wear it to a costume party? If you you drape a Rosary around your neck or your wrist, you are displaying ignorance of other people's religion, mocking--aping--their faith and prayers, and needlessly insulting them and their religion. How do you wear a Rosary? I would be surprised if a Catholic would wear a rosary, unless the Catholic were completely ignorant of the basic elements of his or her religion. But if you have the misguided idea that you are paying tribute to the Catholic religion by aping it, let me ask you a question that may shed light on your behavior. Would you go to a Jewish synagogue during services, sit down in front of the Rabbi, wearing phylacteries around your neck like a necklace, or wearing a prayer shawl as a necktie? Even if you insisted you had only the best of intentions, you would look like a fool, no one would believe you, and no one would be any the less insulted.Wear your Rosary if you like. It's a free country, as I said. You might consider finding a priest to ask him to bless the Rosary, which is traditionally what Catholics do before they begin using the Rosary. The blessing is a prayer that sets the Rosary apart for religious purposes, and then the priest asks God to bless the people who use the Rosary to pray, and bless the people they pray for. And then think why you're wearing the Rosary..Answer from a CatholicThe way to wear a rosary is to join an Religious Order, like the Dominicans, of which the rosary is part of their Habit that they wear attached to their belt. Some people find it very offensive if you are not wearing a religious habit of which the rosary on the belt is part. If you are not Catholic and you are just wearing them for decoration, then, yes, it is extremely offensive to a fervent Catholic to see the Mother of God's holy rosary treated like a fashion accessory by someone who has no more interest in praying with it and doesn't even know what it is for.

Who made the rosary beads?

Traditionally, the rosary has been attributed as given to St. Dominic by Our Lady; this, however, is unproved, although the devotion of the rosary has been particularly associated with his Order, the Dominicans, for over 400 years. In one way or another, the origin goes back to Our Blessed Lady.
