These areas are said to be in the umbra.
From Britannica Online Encyclopedia (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/613811/umbra):
"in an eclipse of the Sun, the regions within the umbra experience a total eclipse and those within the penumbra, partial eclipse."
The darkest part of the shadow is called the umbra
Darkness. It is called a partial or total solar eclipse.
A total solar eclipse occurs for the part of the Earth in the umbra of the moon's shadow. During a total solar eclipse, the Moon completely blocks the Sun, creating a temporary period of darkness on Earth.
That is a total eclipse of the sun.
That is a total eclipse of the sun.
earth and the moon orbit the sun and sometimes the moon blocks the sun from the earth and total darkness goes over earth.
A lunar eclipse: it may be partial or total.
Darkness or a corona
During a total eclipse, it is called the path of totalityAn Eclipse.
when the moon is covering the sun completely it is called a "total solar eclipse", when it is covering part of it it is just called "solar eclipse" .
Half the Earth (all that see the Moon at that time) can see when there is a total eclipse of the Moon (Moon goes into Earths shadow).Only a very small portion of the surface of the Earth is in total shadow during a total eclipse of the Sun (the Moon casts a shadow on the Earth). This totality shadow can be anywhere from several hundred kilometers wide (especially if it is glancing, near the poles as it will be in March of 2015) down to nothing (an annular eclipse if the moon is far enough away in its elliptical orbit).Over the Equator at maximum eclipse the swath that is in total darkness seldom is wider than 200 km and never more than 270 km.
i am 100% sure that it is called a total solar eclipse when it stays between them but there is also partial solar eclipse where the earth has a total shadow and a partial shadow on it. i know this because im a sixth grader.Embarrasing huh?
All eclipses occur when there is a full moon. The type of eclipse will depend on how the Sun, Earth and Moon are lined up at that time. So it can be a total eclipse or a partial eclipse.
