You're referring to a helicopter gunship. Made popular in Vietnam, the French actually employed them first, mounting weapons onto H-21 and H-19 helicopters to provide close air support. This was done as the lighter helicopters of the time did not have enough power to sufficiently mount and carry weapons. These came about before dedicated attack helicopters made their appearance, and were replaced in the gunship role by those dedicated attack helicopters.
