It depends very much on the breed of dog. larger dogs tend to have shorter lives than smaller ones. The average life span of a dog is about 10-13 years for a average size dog.

Genetics first & foremost, breed & environmental factors.

In my breed of choice the Dobermann, the average life expectancy is 10 years, but many don't live that long because back yard breeder & puppy mills don't rigorously health test the sire/dam, to screen for hereditary conditions that could be life limiting or have a serious negative affect on the quality of a dog's life.

Unfortunately some health conditions such a dilated cardiomyopathy {DCM}, the silent killer in the Dobermann, does not yet have a genetic marker & cancer is another illness that some lines are more prone too, but cannot be screened for.

How long a dog will live in a combination of genetics, breed & environmental factors {such as not allowing the dog to become obese/exercise/diet}.
