Will my 10 week old blue heeler's ear prick up?

Most likely. Australian Cattle Dogs are born with their ears floppy, but eventually they should stand up. It does not happen with some dogs until they are a few months old. In rare cases, a dog's ears will stay floppy, though this is a flaw in the show ring. (Perfectly fine for a pet!)

What are the results of Blue heeler and dachshund mix?

I have one! He has the long, short body of a daschund while being a little bigger. He's about 26 pounds. I'm not sure whether the mother or the father was a heeler or a daschund. He has a heeler face with a daschund nose and pointy ears. The bark is really high and piercing like the heeler. Heelers are also referred to as Australian cattle dogs.

Why does your 5 month old blue heelers ears not stand up?

Do not worry as it is more than likely that your puppies ears will stand up by themselves eventually when the cartilage develops. Some puppies ears take longer to stand than others so give it time. If the ears do not stand by themselves, you could always have them cropped (providing it is legal where you live) but this would likely disqualify the Dog from professional shows as according to the Breed Standard the ears should not be cropped.

Is a White Shepherd still a German Shepherd?

Yes...and no. There are purebred, registered German Shepherds who happen to be white. However, under the AKC they are disqualified for showing in the breed ring. This led to a movement to create a separate breed called the White Shepherd (as opposed to the white German Shepherd) under the UKC (United Kennel Club). There was a period of time when a registered white German Shepherd could compete under either breed, but I believe they are now considered two separate breeds. Owners of white German Shepherds had to choose which they wanted their dog to be. Part of the reason for this split is not just about color. On average, White Shepherds have more of a traditional look than modern AKC show German Shepherds. White Shepherds have level backs and are not over angulated, going back to what the German Shepherd was in the 60's and 70's.

Are red heeler dogs good with children?

Australian cattle dogs (blue heelers, red heelers and Queensland heelers) can be wonderful with children. However, they will always try to dominate the "pack", and the children must be involved in the training process, so the dog knows its position in the "pack". If allowed to go unchecked, a cattle dog's natural tendency is dominate others with aggression.

What do you get when you cross breed a blue heeler with a dalmatian?

== == A Bluemation? A Dalheeler? Blue Heelers were crossed with Dalmatians in the late 19th century to improve their relationship with horses (horses, like people, do not like getting their heels nipped). This is why heelers are born-white, and why some of them are rather spotty. See the related link. So a blue heeler-dalmatian cross would be a slightly more dalmatiany-heeler. But what about a red heeler dalmatian cross? a redalmatian?

How do you get a corgi's ears to stand?

Some ears simply need time to prick up on their own. However, if you are concerned that they will not stand on their own, there is a trick you can use. (Don't laugh.) Take tampon tubes and feed his ears into them. Then use adhesive tape to wrap the tubes and secure them in place. Remove the tubes every few days to let the ears breathe and check on their progress. Repeat as necessary.

How long before a blue heeler puppy gets its coloring?

A blue heeler is born all white with the exception of it's black markings. Before 6 weeks of age it will have its adult coloring of black/tan and blue and/or red mottling. It's hard to say exactly when it changes color, just like it's hard to say when it's floppy puppy ears will stand straight up as you see in a pure breed adult dog. There are only general time frames for when these both normally happen.

Why are fat dogs so smelly?

Not all dogs that are overweight are smelly, but there are several reasons why fatter dogs are more likely to emit strong odours.

  • Fatter dogs may have more folds of skin where bacteria breeds, causing a smell.
  • They are less able to reach all parts of their body, so cannot wash themselves as effectively. (Yes, many dogs wash themselves, just as cats do.)
  • They are more prone to having blocked anal glands.
  • Fatter dogs are also more prone to bowel and stomach problems, which cause smells.

What is the best dog food for blue heelers?

If your dog is a working cattle dog, it would require a high performance dog food with higher levels of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. For a working dog that is VERY active everyday, look for a protein level of 25-40% ( it's unusual for a dog to need more than 30% protein), and 18-20% fat. A named source of meat (Beef, Chicken, Turkey, etc.) should be the first ingredient listed on the package.

If your dog is a house pet that gets daily exercise, but doesn't have the extreme nutritional needs of a working cattle dog, then unused protein would be converted to fat by the body. As a general rule, an adult dog that is moderately active requires a diet that's 18-22% protein, and 10-15% fat.

7 month old Australian red heeler is it a good family dog?

1. If you have enough space. We had a heeler on half an acre and he escaped many, many times.

2. If you have the right kind of fence. Privacy, high chain link and concrete or brick are the best. Heelers can dig and if they are very strongly motivated, they are very good at climbing chain link.

3. If you are prepared to break them of nipping (if they are not already trained out of it).

4. If you are prepared to surf website after website,in search of that one piece of information that you need.

5. If you a prepared to try many training techniques and have many fail.

6. If you are ready for a dog that could live to be twenty or more.

7. If you are prepared to teach them that strangers are their friend and cats are not chase toys.

8. If you are ready for an active dog.

Then you are ready to welcome a heeler into your home.

There are many positive things about heelers.

Let's just say that:My dog is my best friend. He has saved lives in little ways. he is a joy to have around and I would trust him with my young sister any day.
