The width of a toilet tank can vary in size. The average width of a toilet tank is about 18 inches.
Toilet sizes are dependent on several factors. Included are whether or not it has a tank, and whether it is free-standing or wall mounted, and then there are ranges within that.

An RV toilet is designed to be mounted over a holding tank. They use almost no water which at first might sound appealing, but unless you have a septic tank under your bathroom it would be bad news for home installation. Unless modified, an RV toilet would not be able to get the solid waste to your home septic system. A home toilet uses the force of the water to move the solid waste to your septic tank. Look for a low flush toilet or a composting toilet instead.
Probably it is due to the size of the toilet tank. If the toilet is a low flow, or under 2 gallons per flush, the tank will be considerably smaller than an older toilet tank, which might hold as much as 25 gallons. The only critical thing in istalling a toilet is if the drain pipe lines up with the drain opening. Unless you move the toilet drain, the new toilet is going to sit in the same place. If you have a gap between the wall and the tank, you might want to put a block of wood or something to help anchor the tank. Newer tanks are smaller due to the reduced water need with the current flushing technology.
There is no average size. The tank will give a range between 90 and 200 miles but it is all down to the manufacturer and the model, engine size and usage.
