First, while it is a staple of talk radio and partisan TV programs to accuse the president and/or the first lady of spending too much or being too extravagant, independent analysis shows that much of the time, these claims are exaggerated or inaccurate. President Obama, like President Bush before him, is given an annual salary of $400,000. (The salary was raised in 2001, so previous presidents received less.)
Presidents also receive an annual budget for expenses-- currently $50,000; and they get an allowance for entertainment and for travel. So the total salary with benefits for the president currently is closer to $600,00 a year. While monthly reports on what a president spends are rarely issued (they tend to come out as part of the president's tax return), there is no evidence that President Obama is exceeding the budget he has been given.
