"The Necklace" is a story about a woman who believes she should have been born or married into a richer family. She wants money and expensive things that she cannot afford. One day when her husband invites her to an event she cries that she has nothing to wear and he reluctantly agrees to give her 400 francs for a new dress. The night of the party she acts weird and her husband discovers that it's because she has no good jewels to wear. He tells her she should see if her wealthy friend will lend her some. He friend lends her a diamond necklace and during the party she gets lots of attention. When she gets back home she realizes that the necklace is gone. She and her husband panic and after searching for a long time realize it cannot be found. She writes a letter, on the advice of her husband, to her friend saying that the clasp has broken and the necklace is being repaired. Her and her husband search for days to find a necklace like the one she borrowed and find one for 36,000 francs at which they spend 4 days scraping up enough money to pay for. When the woman returns the necklace her friend is annoyed at how long it took and doesn't open the case to look at it. The woman and her husband must fire their servant and live in 10 years of crippling poverty where he works 3 jobs and she does the heavy housework in order to pay off the debts the necklace caused. The woman then runs into her friend who doesn't recognize her until after she tells her the story about the necklace and how they spent 10 years paying off the debt and it changed them. Her friend clasps her hands and tells her that the necklace she lost was merely costume jewelry that had no value at all.
Essentially avarice- and a social-climbing stunt that misfires with costly results. one might read in a touch of (Communisme) as the idea did exist at the time. with some hindsight, the whole problem could have been avoided with a timely if conscience-stricken phone call from MMe Loisel ( who lost the necklace) to Mme Forestier- who owned it) could have saved twenty years of hard time- literally- and 64,000 dollars!
