Daphne (Δάφνη in Greek) was a nymph, who apollo fell crazy in love with. He began to chase her endlessly and she was trying to escape him. At the end, when Apollo reached her and tried to hug her, Daphne begged her mother Gaia to help her. Gaia transformed Daphne into a tree, a laurel tree. The hansome god, was deeply wounded. So he cut a branch of the tree and put it on his head as a wreath. Since then laurel was the sacred plant of Apollo.
