Each creature's primal instinct in this life is reproduce itself. Humans are no different. At a biological level each human's need in life it to produce offspring. A family is a way of ensuring the survival of the offspring into the next generation. Each person in a family work to ensure the survival of the children. In basic societies this will mean that the male (usually the father) ensures there is meat and food to eat and no threats or predators are around. The mother nurishes the children, provides food, shelter and warmth. Extended past this will be the grandparents who provide wisdom and teach the young ones skills, watch the children while the parents are away. There may be aunts and uncles who help with the tasks - which will one day be reciprocated with their children.
