For a budding new musician, a great place to start singing is by entering classes and they will teach you professionally how to do it and how to avoid hurting your vocal cords from the very beginning. Some people like me were singing long before they got singing classes (e.g. I started singing when I was 5 and got classes when I was 13), and therefore they may already be aware of the basics of singing and may be able to reach a higher level more quickly. Singing classes will also help you develop your own style as you'll soon realise which songs you love to sing most and how large your vocal range is. (the average range I'd say is a 2 and a half octave range, however it could be higher or lower for most people. I'm fairly lucky as I have a 4 octave range on a good day.)
In a standard SATB (Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass) choral arrangement, the soprano voice sings the highest vocal part written on the music staff. The soprano part is typically sung by a female, although male sopranos do exist in some men's groups. The soprano part is sometimes divided into multiple parts-Soprano 1 typically the highest, Soprano 2 lower, Soprano 3 even lower, etc.
Wanna be the next American idol, well its easy to do without commiting to lessons! 1. Join a church or school chorus or choir 2. Like most of us sing in the shower :) 3. Listen to a ton of music, that way it will work on your tune and let you hear how the pros are doing it!! Good Luck! ~ Remember this: Your voice is your instrument. You cannot play the piano if you never took lessons for it. Same with your voice. If you train it, you will sing better. Also, you will need to know a couple of useful tips and tricks, and you need to know some don't"s about singing. ( Google that )

It is someone who's vocal range can cover a range of octaves, I think it is usually at least 2... Hope this helps :)
I am not assuming I am in the key of F (one flat), there is one semi-tone in each octave: B flat. While Iam navigating the entire 2 1/2 octave range, navigating the range chromatically, then each note change is a semi-tone, 13 semi-tones in all for each octave. So 13+13+6 = 32 semi-tones in 2½ octaves.
