RAID mode 5 (also known as RAID 10) uses three or more hard drives to create a combination of striped and mirrored drives. this allows for fast access (Stripe mode) while also providing data loss security (Mirror mode) at the cost of 50% of the drive space available.

It's probably the best for a home user since it doesn't waste as much drive space like in mirroring but still provides the speed of striping.
