By far the best is Sleep for Android and it has a picture of a sleeping droid. This app let's you choose any song and it records how you sleep and if you snore. It gives you tips on how to sleep better without waking up in the middle of the night after it records your sleeping habits. It is a very neat app, but in addition, it is also configurable for all the four modes of any alarm clock.

There are four key ways alarm clocks function to make you get up:

  1. making a noise until you touch it.
  2. waking you up at a good point in your sleep cycle
  3. making you do something that engages the brain
  4. making you go somewhere

Type #1: traditional alarm clocks: If you just want a trivial alarm clock that makes a noise until you touch it, then they are all as good as each other. Let's assume you've asked the question because you set the alarm out of a need to get up, and these alarm clocks simply don't do it for you: you just hit snooze or dismiss and go back to bed.

Type #2: Alarms that detect a good time in your sleep cycle: the objective of these alarms is to measure your sleep cycles, and detect when you're in a light sleep mode. In the (say) 25 minutes before the alarm time you set, if it sees you're stirring anyway, then the alarm goes off. The theory is that if you get woken up fully, you'll feel fine about it and get out of bed.

Not surprisingly, this is a feature of ALL alarms that are associated with wearables, including all the fitness bands and all the android watches.

In addition, Sleep for Android (which is awesome) does this by measuring vibrations transmitted through your mattress, though you need to leave your phone on your mattress (ideally plugged in).

Type #3: Alarms that do something to engage the brain:the principle is that you cannot snooze or dismiss the alarm without doing some task.

Alarm Clock Plus does this by asking maths questions, which cam be quite tricky on the hard levels. I think Alarm Clock Plus is better than Sleep for Android if you only care about math questions.

Sleep for Android has a whole selection of activities you can set up, including a "whack-a-mole" game using sheep, maths questions, writing a sleep diary and other games that require you to think or have a fast reaction.

Wakie is a social alarm clock where someone who is already awake rings you, and you have to answer questions. It's fun, but not as reliable as I'd like; and you have to play your part and ring people who need waking when you're awake.

Type #4: Alarms that make you go somewhere: the principle here is straight forward -- the alarm cannot be silenced from your bed without a sledgehammer. If you have a partner in bed who does not like you waking them up, then any Type #3 alarm is good enough -- you'll have to leave the room or simply be kicked!

Sleep for Android has a series of forced activities you can do. The one I personally use is the requirement to take a photo of a QR code. The QR code I selected is above the coffee machine, so I can only dismiss the alarm by doing down to the coffee machine. (Note: this is a disaster if you end up in the wrong bed one night, do be sure to have a QR code which you can find on any computer or a phone, and then it's a fun discussion point at 05:15 after 30 minutes sleep).
