It obviously makes sense to ensure that the software will run on the laptop you've chosen. Secondly, there has to be a way to transfer compiled code into the target device for debugging, so whatever way is used must be supported by the laptop. Usually, I'd question the use of a laptop as a development machine; they are, by definition, difficult to expand and they are more expensive for a given power of machine. Usually, laptops are used for portability, but embedded developers tend to be "glued" to the embedded hardware so there isn't much point in using a laptop.
