I have also owned both GSD and Dobies... First, if you are looking into getting a dog based on its ability to win a fight with another dog, get a different hobby. Personal or property protection are great reasons to have a dog around, but a better one is the companionship and all around fun it can be to own one of these breeds. Now, I have seen two different dobermans kill other dogs in a fight. First one was a GSD/collie mix, the other was an attack by two coyotes. Neighbor's dog was running across our farm and near the back yard, our dobie perked up, gave a couple warning "woofs", then took off like a rocket and hit the other dog with open jaw. In about 3 minutes my dobie came trotting back to the porch, small nick in his ear, and the other dog was dead. A second doberman we owned got into it with some coyotes on our property. Killed one and ran the other off. This same doberman survived an attack by 3 wild dogs (not coyotes), didn't kill any of the others, but ran them off our property. There are good reasons the doberman is the official guard/attack dog of the USMC, and it isn't because they just look mean. Like the marines that work with those dogs, they can back it up with action. Having said that a gsd is tough but not as tough as a doberman
