Depends for what the image is going to be used. If it's for a high resolution printing such as print ad in a magazine or poster TIFF format with LZW is preferred for quality purpose. JPEG format gives more options for compressing an image, especially for web usages or not for high quality printing purpose.

Also it depends on the original image quality and resolution, if the quality of the original image is good, then JPEG will be a good option to use.
