Best is subjective. I can tell you that Purolator, Wix, Motorcraft, NAPA, Bosch, & AC/Delco are all excellent filters of high quality and any of these is a good choice.

It comes standard with one engine oil filter and one transmission oil filter. However, after-market oil filters are available, and some people add an extra filter in hopes of extending the life of the oil or engine.

As far as I remember from my old V Dub days is there wasn't an oil filter but a screen located at the drainplug. Therefore you would lose your oil by removing it. If it has an after market filter you should be able to change it with little spillage.
Not sure why you would want to use a different filter. The AMSOIL is the best on the market. If you like, provide the AMSOIL part # or the year/make/mode/engine size and I will likely be able to find a replacement
