Takamine makes some great acoustic-electrics for the money. Low-end Martins are erratic, but the DCX1E (around $700 street price when new) is quite good. However, the black 000CXE and DCXE are literally the worst-sounding acoustic-electric guitars I've ever heard live.
Two other good money-for-value brands are Ibanez and Alvarez.
Taylors have nearly unrivalled playing comfort, but many folk players complain that Taylors don't sound warm enough; they are known for their sparkly, treble-heavy sound which cuts through a band mix very well, but isn't as "complex" acoustically. However, Taylors do have extremely good electronics, such as their pioneering Expression System, and its revolutionary T5 model turned the guitar world on its head in 2005 by combining the ES technology with electric-guitar sounds, resulting in a true hybrid guitar that can get good acoustic sounds even from an electric amp, and is as easy to play as most electric guitars. The T5 model has spawned many imitators, from companies such as Crafter, Washburn and Ibanez.
If you like Taylors but can't afford them, Breedlove is a name worth looking into. Founder Larry Breedlove was an associate of Robert Taylor and his guitars are quite similar in feel, sound and design.
Taylor is one of the best accoustic makes.
This is quite an assortment or names. I must say though that "a good brand" will be the one with a great neck, great sound and feels good in your hands. Ya just gotta get out to the stores and play a bunch of them. Bring a friend and have him play while you walk around an listen. You will hear a difference between playing and listening.
There really is no "best" acoustic guitar, but Taylors, Martins, and Gibsons seem to be of the highest quality generally.
