The short answer is 7kw - 9 kw. Though I am not a professional with this topic, I have extensively researched the issue and installed a generator in my home. The longer answer is based on how much money you're willing to spend. I have a Briggs & Stratton EXL8000. This generator will produce about 7200kw of continuous current (per the manual) and runs everything in my house but the central air. Every house is different though, so the real question that you should ask is what is the best sized generator to power MY home? In order to get that answer, I would take an inventory of the items in your home that you want to use during a power outage. From there you can easily determine, the electrical need of each appliance with a little internet research. Once you have that, simply add them all together. This is not the complete answer, but it will give you an idea of how much total wattage you'll need if everything is running. In my case, I found that I could power everything, but the central air unit. Buying a generator that would power 100% of my home including the central air would have cost considerably more. I decided, I could survive just fine without central air, and bought the generator described above. We've used it more times that I can remember and it has worked flawlessly each time.
