What is the best small sailboat design 25 - 35 ft. for a LA to Hawaii trip?

Boats in the 24 to 27 foot range are somewhat different from their larger cousins in the 30 to 35 foot range. There are small boats, say a International Folkboat, Contessa 26 (same boat) which can handle the conditions of open ocean. However, it's generally conceded by people who do this sort of thing on a regular basis that a "crusing" boat in the 30 foot range and upward are safer in the long run. The folkboat is an exception in that it's incredably well made, has a full keel and used examples are quite affordable. Having said that, people have made that trip in every thing from rafts to canoes to Cal 20s. You pays your money and takes your chances. Good luck.
