I am a part time dog trainer and i have three large dogs of my own and i can confidently say i can walk all three of them at once without them pulling! So please try this method before investing in collars and harnesses! Although a harness can sometimes make a large dog feel like it has a job to do therefore they tend to 'plod' more. (All three of my dogs are walked on harnesses). If you are having trouble with a pulling dog try training it.... When i start to train a dog i always say a short walk without pulling is far better than a long walk pulling! What you do is you start walking with your dog, if it pulls forward you stop, wait for the dog to come back to you (even if this takes a while it is worth it) when the lead becomes slack start to walk again *if the dog does not come back towards you then walk back so the dog will automatically turn around to follow you causing a slack lead therefore you walk forward again. Repeat until your dog has pawfect heelwork! Patience is the key to succeeding in this training! ----

It depends on what kind of training you would be doing. There are many different types of collars for different situations. For example, you would buy a choke collar if your dog has the problem of running off or tends to chase anything in sight when you walk him/her. Another example is an electric collar used to train dogs to keep their yaps shut or in tandem with an electric fence to keep them within a certain perimeter

Training Collars for Your Dog?

Training collars are different from regular collars in that their purpose is to enable a handler to guide a dog and to check the dog if necessary. A check is a tug on the leash that's followed immediately by a release of tension. The training collar is also removed when the trainer isn't training the dog and replaced with a regular buckle collar with the dog's ID tags. The best sort of training collar is a snap around collar. The snap around has a clasp that lets a trainer fasten the collar high on the dog's neck, where the trainer has the most control. It also doesn't have to be slipped over the dog's head and can fit snugly. Many of them are made of nylon and can be easily found in pet stores. They're also fairly inexpensive and effective training tools. However, they'll have to be replaced regularly, as a puppy will grow out of them. Snap around collars are also safe. Snap around collars come in half inch increments. They have a clasp on one side, a ring on the other side and another floating ring. The trainer or owner might think that the collar is much too tight at first, but after they put it on the dog they should wait for about five minutes, till the dog is relaxed. Then, they should try to slip two fingers between the collar and the dog's neck, or one finger if it's a toy dog. If the fingers can't fit, the collar is too tight. However, if the trainer can fit three or more fingers between the collar and the dog, it's too loose. Another sort of training collar is the pinch collar. This tends to work better on large dogs. It's also called a German collar or a prong collar, and though it looks gruesome, it is safe and most of all, effective. The pinch collar is also available in pet stores, but it's about twice as expensive as a snap around collar. It comes in large, medium, small and micro sizes. The micro size, which is appropriate for toy dogs, needs to be specially ordered.

What type of collar should be purchase to put you in control?

A dull edged pinch chain is the best to try training your large breed dog. It will retard any attempts for the dog to pull you and teach him/her to walk by your side at your speed. A citronella spray collar is a good choice for excessive barking. Smaller dogs, or ones with smaller heads, you may need to get a harness instead of a collar.

Is a shock collar a good training method?

Yes they can be very effective and pretty harmless. Some dogs who are neurotic can be affected negatively by them though .If you have a pretty mentally stabe dog then i recommend them . As long as your getting an electric fence and not tryin to torture your dog :] 2nd Answer: Play and pats are the best training method. If you are training a dog not to bark, then a shock collar is appropriate. Many dogs simply ignore the spray collars. BUT, if you use a shock collar, follow the dog around on the few times that you use it, and firmly command, "No Bark!" along with the shock. In short order, it will learn to obey your voice command. Unless it is a border collie, etc, which will also quickly learn when it has the shock collar on, and when it doesn't. When using the shock collar, you most likely will have to remove the regular collar with the dog's name and rabies tags . . . BE CAREFUL to not let the dog get away from you. Do not leave the dog unattended with the shock collar on and turned on! Most important be sure you KNOW what you are doing and how to handle the shock collar properly before you use it on your dog.

Would a shock collar work to train a really big dog?

Dog Shock Collars are made for virtually any size dog, but when buying a Training Collar you must also consider what you will be using it for. There are generally two types of Dog training Collar, those used for obedience training and those used for hunting. Some can be used for both but it is often unnecessary to have the features of a hunting collar if you just need it for obedience. Another view: Yes, if it is rated for a dog of that size. Shock collars come in different strengths for different size dogs.
