Yes they can be very effective and pretty harmless. Some dogs who are neurotic can be affected negatively by them though .If you have a pretty mentally stabe dog then i recommend them . As long as your getting an electric fence and not tryin to torture your dog :]

2nd Answer:

Play and pats are the best training method. If you are training a dog not to bark, then a shock collar is appropriate. Many dogs simply ignore the spray collars. BUT, if you use a shock collar, follow the dog around on the few times that you use it, and firmly command, "No Bark!" along with the shock. In short order, it will learn to obey your voice command. Unless it is a border collie, etc, which will also quickly learn when it has the shock collar on, and when it doesn't.

When using the shock collar, you most likely will have to remove the regular collar with the dog's name and rabies tags . . . BE CAREFUL to not let the dog get away from you. Do not leave the dog unattended with the shock collar on and turned on!

Most important be sure you KNOW what you are doing and how to handle the shock collar properly before you use it on your dog.

Give your dog a one word command like sit if it does sit praise him or her tell them how good they are if they don't do it they say no and choke them with the collar it might sound harsh but it is not. if the dog bites you tell him how awful and mean he is some things you can say our "you are a bad boy no" what every you do don't say like no i told you not to do that why would you do that you are not good why would you do that that is way to much words the dog is going to look at you like you are crazy good luck

What size are Miniature Pinscher's collars to fit his neck I know it small size but what the numbers of size for Miniature Pinscher's neck?

I'm not sure, but their is a way to find out, if you do own a miniature pincher, you can take a peice of string, put it around your dogs neck as if it were a collar,(make sure not to leave any remaning string hanging out), then take the string and aline on a ruler or measering tape and add 2-3 inches on the ruler,( the extra inches will leave space between the collar and the dogs neck). (I too own a min pin named Reno), so good luck with the collar!

What is better a shock collar or a vibrating collar?

A vibrating one might be less harmful to the animal but neither really should be used. Shock collars are part of what is called negative reinforcement training, where something bad happens to the dog if they do not do what you want. Negative reinforcement teaches your dog to do what you want because they fear you. They don't do it because they want to please their owner, they do it for fear they may get hurt or shocked again. This method produces quick results, but destroys the bond between dog and owner, and often the dog is not taught and corrective behaviour - just not to do something. Positive reinforcement teaches your dog to do what you want because they get something good and they want to please you. Positive reinforcement is always the way to go with training. You and your dog will be much happier. It will also depend on the dog as a vibrating collar may not work as well with some dogs.

Are there training collars for dogs that let you give a mild shock if the dog does something naughty?

There are such collars. How effective they are, and morever, how cruel they are are topics of debate. A number of groups are lobbying to outlaw electrocution collars. You might have a look at ultrasonic colloars, or better yet, a good training program for both you and your dog. There are far better ways to train a dog. That said, you can check out the www.petsmart.com Yes there are electic shock collars. They are safe but only if used properly. You should get profesional help with the collar.

Is the electroshock collar for dogs safe?

Just from personal experience, I am leaning toward the fact that they can or a least contribute to seizure activity if the dog is predisposed to having them. I rescued a standard poodle who had been living most of his 3 years wearing a shock collar for an invisible fence. With in the first few weeks he had a seizure - and about 2 months..but as time went on, without the shock collar, the seizures became less frequent - only two in the last 8 months and much less severe. My feeling is that since I have had him, no more electrodes passing though his body.

Is using a choker collar on a dog while training them to heel harmful to the animal?

The choke collar/chain is a training tool and as with any tool there is the potential for misuse. A hammer used one way can help build a house. Used another way, it can destroy it.Do your research and you will discover that the choke chain is a time tested instrument that, used properly, results in a well trained dog without inflicting physical harm. It is often misunderstood and misused simply because of its name.Consult a qualified trainer for instruction on the proper fitting and use of this training tool. A German study showed that damage to the dog's trachea or Hood was very common if this type of collar wasn't used properly.IMPORTANT: DO NOT LEAVE YOUR COLLAR ON YOUR DOG ALL THE TIME. ONLY WHEN IT IS NEEDED.IMPORTANT: TAKE OFF COLLARS, LEASHES, ETC. WHEN PUTTING YOUR DOG IN A CRATEOther contributors have said:If you decide to use the choker collar then that's what the choker collar is meant for to teach your dog how to heel because if your dog pulls to much you gently pull. You don't pull hard otherwise your dog will get hurt. so it could be harmful if you pull too hard. while training my dog I used the choker collar. I didn't pull too hard and it worked and my dog did not get hurt. I prefer the choker collar better than any other collar to teach your dog how to heel. Also, if you feel your dog is not pulling anymore after your training, you can try a regular collar. If you feel it doesn't work and your dog is pulling again go back to the choker chain. It will NOT hurt the dog if you use it properly. For more information on collars you can visit the following link in the source related link.It could help you make a decision on what is best for your dog.The fact that you have posed the question implies that you are already doubtful about the use of a choke collar and therefore unfamiliar with the collar yourself. As another answer confirmed, a choke collar can harm a dog's trachea and potentially whole spinal area - they are very dangerous if not used correctly and it is easy for an untrained person to unwittingly inflict pain and damage on their dog using a choke collar. More humane methods of training a dog not to pull are widely available, with no risk of hurting your dog. A 10 step system of 'how to train your dog to walk nicely and stop pulling' is linked below - a simple, tried and tested method that works well with a good, inexpensive anti-pull harness. Dog training DVDs are a good source of you learning how to train your dog using natural methods with no expensive, potentially harmfull products such as choke chains and shock collars.

Do shock collars work on training puppies?

Shock collars are NEVER the way to train a dog, especially a puppy. Puppies are very sensitive to the world as it is; add an electric shock every time they perform a certain task and you will have, not a trained dog, but a dog that is insecure and, therefore, more likely to act aggressive. Shock collars are part of what is called negative reinforcement training, where something bad happens to the dog if they do not do what you want. Negative reinforcement teaches your dog to do what you want because they fear you. Positive reinforcement teaches your dog to do what you want because they get something good and they want to please you. Positive reinforcement is always the way to go with training. You and your dog will be much happier.
