A thesaurus would be the best reference to find another word for "famished". You can also use online thesaurus tools to quickly find synonyms for any word.
You could research "walk" in a thesaurus and then use past tense to create synonyms for "walked." You may actually find "walked" in a thesaurus.
A thesaurus is a good tool to use for writing, but you should never try to use words with which you are unfamiliar. The best tool you can use in revising an essay is your voice; read your work out loud. When you do this, you are engaging another sense, and one that is more familiar to you in communication. If it sounds right to your own ears, it probably is. If it sounds awkward, it needs to be revised.
