If you plan to use only the very latest applications designed for that version, the answer is obvious. However if you need to run applications that work well on Windows XP and you do not really need the features of a new version, Windows XP has proven to be a very reliable, stable, consistent, well understood operating system. The same can be said for Windows 2000 and its predecessor Windows NT, however these lack some functionality now considered required by many users. Newer versions of Windows despite their claimed "compatibility modes" have proven unfriendly or incompatible to many popular legacy programs and hardware, and are disruptive to attempts to run open source operating systems and software alongside or within Windows.
