Yes you can certainly contact your local fireplace cleaning/repair location to get insulation for the fireplace and to check the chimney for leaks as well.
Yes, unless it has a secure screen at the top, a raccoon will use a chimney as a way to get into a house.
It should be. A poor draft can mean a poorly designed or a poorly built/ maintained chimney. either way, a poor draft will cause a poorly burning, smoking fireplace.
When a fireplace is not being used... glass doors are not a good way to stop cold air from exiting the chimney. The first thing that needs to be done is the fireplace damper should be closed to prevent this heat loss. If the damper is not-functional or absent a chimney balloon or chimney top damper can be installed to stop the heat loss. When there is a fire in the fireplace...Fireplace glass doors reduce the amount of already heated interior air that the fireplace has access to. So it does slow down the inside heated air from being cast up the chimney with the fires combustion heat, but glass doors do not stop this heat waste completely. Fireplace glass doors also inhibit the only usable heat the a fireplace produces (radiant heat) from coming into the living area. Standard open fireplaces and fireplaces with glass doors are notoriously inefficient at heating the home. According to the US Department of Energy using a fireplace in the winter will actually make your heating bill go up by 10% on average.
Fireplace accessories such as metal pipe, brushes and caps will vary in price. Chimney brushes prices for example range from $6.95 for a simple wire brush all the way up to $49.00 for a U shaped brush.
The correct way to write fireplace is as one word - "fireplace."
When you use the fireplace, the damper should be open all the way. If not, you probably will not get enough updraft and your house will fill up with smoke...not a good thing. When it is not in use, the damper should be closed...otherwise you will lose a lot of heat up the chimney.
The best way to block arrows in schiltron is by using a shield
First of all you've got to open the cheat box [ctrl+shift+c], write "moveobjects on" and obviously press enter, then you place the fireplace where you want it to be (afterwards you can't move it, or, better, you can but the cimney will appear again), select the hammer tool and delete the chimney, only the chimney. The fireplace is supposed to stay there while the chimney should disappear (if your house has more floors you have to go to avery floor and delete the chimney with the hammer). If it doesn't work then I don't know, I get rid of the chimneys this way C:
Warm- normal. HOT- not normal. The flue gasses passing thru the chimney are VERY hot- they will gradually warm the mass of the concrete blocks and the flue liner- which will also cool down slowly. It should not be so hot that holding your hand on it is uncomfortable. Our home has a rather massive concrete chimney- takes 3 days to warm all the way up- and will stay wam for about 3 days after the fire is out.
Yes, this is a great way to exhaust a single hose portable air conditioner. You would simply need to adapt the hose connections to the front of your fireplace. I have seen an installation where the front of the fireplace was sealed with a piece of plexiglas. The plexiglas had been custom cut to fit the portable AC's fittings.
The best way to clean a limestone fireplace is by using a pH neutral stone cleaner. This cleaner is used with warm water and a sponge.
