If these tests above are suspicious for celiac disease, the next step is a biopsy (removal of a tiny piece of tissue surgically) of the small intestine. This is usually done by a gastroenterologist.

If celiac disease is suspected, a blood test can be ordered. This test looks for the antibodies to gluten (called antigliadin, anti-endomysium, and antireticulin) that the immune system produces in celiac disease.

Most people first discover Celiac Disease by connecting the symptoms they have then seeing a doctor. A blood test, screening, or biopsy can be scheduled by your doctor to see if you do have Celiac Disease. The screening and biopsy would be used to see the outer lining of the small intestines to check if they is damage done from the consumption of gluten and the blood test can only be correct if the patient is on gluten for more then 3 months too.

What are the symptoms of Celiac's disease?

I was diagnosed with celiac disease when I was four years old. Although I have grown up learning to say no to food that I didn't know what the ingredient list was, occasionally I eat wheat, malt or barley by accident or contamination. Some symptoms that I experience are; tingling fingers, diarrhea, cramps, passing gas, and nightmares. Many times I have woken up the morning after I had come in contact and family members have said they hear me crying or screaming in my sleep and that is how I know that I have come in contact. The next day is when you experience most or all of the other symptoms. Hope this helps anyone that may think that they are a celiac. Also if you live in Canada there are many Celiac Association meetings where they discuss celiac disease. You can find more information at the Celiac Association website in the link ---> http://www.celiac.ca/

What alcohol can someone with celiac disease have?

Not that I know of. Celiac is a genetic disorder that is inherited from your parents. Alcohol can make it worse however. ------ Another form of the question may be, "Can celiac disease cause alcoholism?". I strongly believe this to be the case. Through personal experience and what I've read from others, alcoholism is often apparent long before a Celiac diagnosis. Celiacs who ingest gluten while unaware of the disease may experience extreme anxiety and depression due to neurotoxins in the blood. Alcohol can provide a temporary escape from the unexplained physical and mental symptoms that result. This gives the impression that Celiac may have been caused by alcohol, when in fact, it is the other way around.
