There are several different ways you can try to get a cow on her feet:
1. Twist her tail
2. Startle her using loud voices, banging on a pail or a pan, or dancing wildly in front of her
3. Put your hands firmly over her nostrils so she can't breathe, then release when she's up
4. Put a hot-shot or cattle prod on the hairless area under her tail.
5. Put some hip-lifters or wide belting on her to help her get up on her feet for 15 to 20 minutes per day of any of the above 4 tips have not worked.
NEVER beat, kick, slap, or punch a cow if she can't get up.
If she still refuses to get up, or just can't, make her comfortable. Hobble her legs so if she does get up, she won't accidentally do the splits and break her leg if she falls down again. Provide fresh straw a couple times a day, along with water and feed. If she's in the open, put a wall of bales around her so she's out of the wind. Check with your local veterinarian of what else needs to be done to help get her up again.
