WHENEVER SOMEONE has been on a medication, they should NEVER stop taking it abruptly. You need to "wean" yourself off of it gradually, under the supervision of the prescribing physician. They will give you a timetable to follow, taking a little less of it each day until you are off of it completely. Whether you want to stop taking it because you don't like the effects, or the doctor wants you to stop taking it, you must get off of it slowly. Especially with Adderall, which is classified as a stimulant (amphetamine). Stopping it "cold turkey" could have very unpleasant side effects. You may, as you mentioned, be very tired, irritable, unhappy, very hungry and sick to your stomach. Slowly discontinuing the medication will help lessen, if not prevent those feelings. Stopping the medication abruptly may cause some or all of these side effects, and possibly other unpleasant feelings. Stopping a medication very slowly, a little at a time, should prevent or at least greatly diminish the unpleasantness. Just make sure your doctor is aware that you are stopping. I hope this has helped answer your questions. GOOD LUCK! <<
I've been struggling with this battle for over 5 years. It's unlike other drugs that can be tapered down or slowly weaned off - DO NOT try to do that on your own. The safest approach is to see a Neurologist - long term Adderall use effects neurotransmitters and withdrawal can damage your cognitive skills in the future. Good luck!
