For me personally, there are three pieces of writing advice that I personally find very useful to follow:
- Only use a complex word if simpler phrasing will not work. It is always less pretentious and easier to follow if you express your ideas as simply as possible.
- Do not use the passive voice unless it is completely necessary. The passive weakens the strength of the verb. "John's arm was burned ." innately sounds weaker than "The fire burned John's arm."
- Do not tell your readers what happened or how your characters feel, but rather show them through the use of artistic metaphor. For example, do not say, "John was fearful he would lose his job." Rather, say, "As John walked into the office, his heart was trembling and his mind flashed back repeatedly to the argument he had with his boss the prior afternoon. Every step was fraught with trepidation and he constantly scanned the room in a vain effort to avoid the confrontation that could send him home." The second phrasing gets you into the mood so that you understand that John was fearful he would lose his job, but in such a way that you really connect with John and why he feels what he feels.
