The biggest benefit of astronomy seems to be that it satisfied our curiosity about the universe in which we live, but there could also be a more practical benefit, which is that we may, in theory, be able to predict the next major impact of a comet or asteroid on our planet, in time to be able to send a mission into space to alter its orbit so that it will miss the Earth. That could be a very big benefit.
