The largest rock in Australia and, indeed, the whole world is Mt Augustus (Burringurrah, as it is known by Wajarri Yamatji traditional owners), in Western Australia, located inland, east of Carnarvon, and about 850km north of Perth. It is more than twice the size of Uluru- Ayers Rock. It rises 717 metres above the stony desert, and extends for a length of 8km - almost the entire circumference of Uluru. (Some sources say Mt Augustus is 858m in height, but Western Australia's Department of Conservation and Land Management states 717m.)

What is the biggest monocline in Australia?

The largest monocline in Australia, and in the world, is Mt Augustus in Western Australia. However, there is some dispute as to whether Mt Augustus is a monolith or a monocline. A monocline is an exposed slab of rock which belongs to the layer of rock underneath. Uluru/Ayers Rock is often regarded as the least monolith or monocline, as there is more of the rock below the surface than above; regardless, Mt Augustus is larger than Uluru.

What about Mount Augustus in WA Australia?

Mount Augustus, or Burringurrah as it is known by the local Wadjari Aboriginal people, is about 850 kilometres from Perth and midway between the Great Northern and North West Coastal highways. One of the most spectacular solitary peaks in the world, it rises 717 metres above a stony, red sandplain of arid shrubland-dominated by wattles, cassias and eremophilas-and is clearly visible from the air for more than 160 kilometres. This makes Mt. Augustus the biggest monolith in the world.
